Why is delayed death possible with a head injury?

On Behalf of | Feb 11, 2021 | Wrongful Death

Head injuries are always serious even if you do not believe your injury is severe. Sometimes an injury to the head may seem minor because there are no outward symptoms or signs of a problem, but later, signs and symptoms show up.

It is even possible for a head injury that seems like no big deal to lead to death days or even weeks later. According to the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, many delayed deaths from head injuries occur due to hematomas or contusions that cause pressure inside the skull.

Hematoma

A hematoma is a blood clot. It can occur in or on the brain as a result of an injury. It will cause blood to collect which can lead to pressure and damage to the brain.

Contusion

A contusion is a bruise. You can have contusions anywhere, but when it occurs within the brain, it can lead to swelling.

Hemorrhage

Another potential issue with a head injury that could lead to a delayed death is a hemorrhage. This is active bleeding in the brain. The blood cannot leave the confines of the skull, which leads to swelling and brain damage.

If a hemorrhage goes undetected, it can easily lead to death. However, you may have no idea your brain is bleeding if you do not seek medical attention right after a head injury.

Preventing death

The best way to combat these issues and prevent death is a quick diagnosis, which is why you should take every head injury seriously. Once a doctor locates an issue, he or she may keep you under watch to monitor swelling. If things get worse, the doctor may open your skull to help relieve the pressure and drain any blood or fluid that is collecting there.
